Limitations of BMI

BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. A professional athlete with 5% body fat and 85kg of muscle mass may register as "overweight." Conversely, a sedentary person with 30% body fat may be "normal weight" due to low muscle mass. BMI also shows different risk thresholds across ethnicities—South Asian populations face increased cardiovascular risk at BMI 23–27.5, lower than the standard "overweight" threshold of 25.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and TDEE

Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body requires to function at rest. It is calculated using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (the most accurate formula per the American Council on Exercise):

Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age) + 5

Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age) - 161
